Ethical policy
Don’t conform, make a difference… If you are scary in a mosh pit but go weak at the knees for a fluffy bunny, or love shopping but hate waste, join the masses that are now beginning to appreciate ethical values. Rag and Magpie believes you can demonstrate good style without compromise and that a stylish and design-led lifestyle can also be a sustainable one.
Rag and Magpie does not like waste... we like animals, plants, sunshine and rockin’ style! Small changes will make a big difference to maintaining all of these things.
Recycling fashion
We love recycling! We look in nooks & crannies for amazing things that have been abandoned. If something is in great condition it will find itself in our boutique and if it’s broken we’ll either fix it or make it into something new for you to buy.
In 2008 textiles filling UK mainland landfills had risen to a massive 30% from 7% in 2003. We can overcome this throw-away existence if we all adopt a more considerate approach. We are aware many clothing lines have not used honest and good quality production methods in the past and as such mass amounts of textile have gone to waste. We think these items can partially redeem themselves if passed from loving home to loving home rather than end up in a landfill. We hope we can encourage you to use pre-owned and recycled fashion pieces to mix and match with other items in your closet.

Say no to fur manufacture
We at Rag and Magpie has strong beliefs about the use of animal products in fashion but we also think people should be able to make up their own minds. It is true that many animal friendly people believe it is ok to wear fur if it is vintage, we however would like to promote the use and encourage the development of artificial furs. As such we have a strict policy against the use of fur in modern fashion production therefore you will not find authentic fur products on this site. We will however stock pre-owned products which are made using food industry by-products such as leather shoes or belts.
Ethical & ecological production
Our own brand products are made from recycled materials, reusing unwanted items and vintage fabrics where possible. We make lots of the items ourselves by hand and when outsourcing endeavour to find ethical craftspeople and manufacturers to help us. This gives each item a ‘one-off’ look and even each item in the same style will look slightly different due to its hand produced qualities.
When we buy in limited collections we will select only designers and craftspeople that identify with this policy and use ethical or ecological procedures or materials in production.
And it’s not all about clothes either! We trust in the idea of recycled materials and recycling for all elements of business. For our marketing we select eco-aware printing companies who use vegetable oil inks and print onto recycled card. We strive for a paper-free office but when we do need to print we choose recycled paper for our in-house and customer literature and artwork.
Made in the UK
We love the reputation of British fashion talent and as such would like to foster this by working with local and national designers and craftspeople, meanwhile reducing our own carbon footprint. If products and materials are sourced within the UK no shipping fuels will be used, this is just another small step…
We are interested in home-grown goods and materials so if you think you have something great to add to our collection, let us know!
