Bits of the set: 1950s Fashion Books and Homeware

As it was only my second interaction with a motion camera, as soon as the red light went on I felt like I turned into a mumbling fool completely unable to control facial expression and didn’t quite get everything out that I wanted to say but I’m sure the crew will make I wonderful job editing that bit so I look vaguely normal. I was interviewed about Rag and Magpie, why the store was opened, what our bestsellers are, who our customers are, a little about why vintage is so interesting to me and possibly others and then they took some film of some of the forthcoming stock and items from around my home and be buzzing about the place doing work things. 1940s Style Circular Hat With Burgundy Roses

If you’re a fan of our shop and specifically our accessories department you might be wondering “where have all the beautiful vintage style hats by Rosielee Clothing gone?” Fear not, we have still got them in store but the independent label who makes them has separated their clothing line from their hats range and re-branded in order to expand. The 1950s style clothing is still under the Rosielee clothing label but the wonderful 1940s style hats range is now available under the label Rose Patricia Millinery, as such they can now all be found on the Rag and Magpie store at www.ragandmagpie.co.uk/rose-patricia-millinery.

Gabrialle Gambetta Leopard Print Pencil Dress

Rag and Magpie presents the exclusive new line of handmade vintage inspired dresses from indie fashion designer Gabriella Gambetta. I met Gabriella when I spotted her debut collection at a graduate designers showcase in Brick Lane, London. Her designs immediately stood out to me as different, alternative. Gabriella tells me she in inspired by rock music and Gothic art and this was evident in her debut collection and also her collaborative label 4.2morrow who’s t-shirt range was on sale at Rag and Magpie in 2010-2011. The latest offering is quite a step away from that, a more feminine classic pin-up style aesthetic in the form of a handful of 1950s style circle dresses and pencil dresses.

The Green Dress

Rag and Magpie are proud to be supporting Colne-based Boundary Bathrooms in their mission to support Help For Heroes with their 1940s charity fund-raising event. The event will feature demonstrations of The Lindyhop, refreshments, a large prize raffle, children’s face painting and a vintage clothing sale where visitors can buy fashions and designer frocks from yesteryear. We have donated a Velvet Dress With Gold Belt (left) to help raise funds in the vintage clothing sale.

If you’d like to donate some of your vintage to help the event public donations of good quality and designer vintage clothing and accessories are welcomed and should be delivered to the Boundary Bathrooms showroom in Regent Street, Colne, Lancs, BB8 8LD before the event.

Bow Vintage Fete went well. We had a great crowd of inspiring and enthusiastic vendors and The Eleanor Arms was transformed within an hour into a mini vintage and retro haven. Lesley had produced some wonderful cakes and pots of tea were popping up all over. Sadly Our dear Lex at Rockabetty got a flat tyre on the way and instead of joining in the fun was stuck at the side of the dual carriageway for hours (our hearts out to you Lex). We expect to do another Bow Vintage Fete during winter, watch this space for updates.

Kitten and Me

On Saturday I awoke uncharacteristically early for a Saturday and zipped up to Warwickshire to spend the day with Candee Photography and Pin-Up model and performer Kitten Von Mew. These lovely girls and they respective fellas were aiding me in producing a brand new Rag and Magpie photo shoot and Kitten Von Mew is the newest face of Rag and Magpie. Candee Photography is currently editing digital film but sent over a little preview of what’s to come… I can’t wait to see the rest of the shoot!

Sunday was a day of rest. I drove up to a country house in Cambridgeshire early on Monday morning with Jo, The Dress Doctor. Jo is a seamstress driven by her need to reinvent wardrobes of the UK for those who need it, but this wasn’t about her work… It was about mine. Jo has bravely let me loose on her vast private stash of vintage clothing, accessories and homeware in order to add them to the ranks of what’s on offer in the Rag and Magpie online shop.  Less a few tea brakes here and there (and a moment or two of me squealing at spiders) we spent hours and hours sifting through the piles, boxes and cases crammed into her massive attic. I will be popping back soon to finish the job. After some weeks of hard graft and some due care and attention from Jo’s nimble fingers I suspect we’ll have a collection of vintage hard to rival, one which will take Rag and Magpie into 2012.
