High waist pleated culotte shorts and matching floral halter top by Alderglen circa early 1940s. Typical of 1930s – 1940s ‘playwear’ these brightly patterned vintage shorts are very high waisted with a wide leg in order to preserve the modesty and femininity of the wearer. Based on vintage sewing patterns of the era this handmade set is estimated to date circa early 1940s.
The shorts have two box pleats on the front and back of each leg sewn closed to just below the hips where they open out to give flare to the bottom of the shorts. They fasten at both sides with two large off-white old plastic buttons and a press stud. The top is halter-neck with a centre front and side gathers, each created with three vertical lines of shirring stitch. The back straps tie in a knot or bow where desired. The off-white linen-like fabric is printed with a fine black floral print resembling pansies in crimson red, Persian green, Mikado yellow and Duke blue.

Gingham is synonymous with summer. It conjours images of picnics in the park and Dorothy Gayle skipping. This being said I was surprised to find two dresses almost identical in style, both circa 1960s, both by different makers (seemingly, one is by Louis Caring of London and the other has no tags to identify its maker) and yet both with a Gingham check…
